Whitchurch History Cymru

Local history walks

With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Cadw we were able to create 3 local history walks in Whitchurch Village focusing on Old Church Road (the heart of the original village); The Philog extending from the Brook to Manor Way; and St Mary’s to the War Memorial. These are the first three of what we hope will be a series of walks around the area.

The walks took place in Summer and Autumn 2022, were written and led by enthusiastic and informed AWEN volunteers and illuminated by temporary waymarker boards with illustrations created by local artists. More than 200 participants enjoyed taking part as you can see from the photographs and now you can enjoy these walks too by downloading the walk booklets and maps or collecting a copy from Whitchurch Hub, Park Road, Whitchurch, CF14 7XA.

Old Church Road

Our first history walk along Old Church Road, the heart of the old village, was AWEN's contribution to Whitchurch Festival in June 2022. Thank you to local historians Nigel Lewis and Terry Chard, artists Chris Griffin and Anthony Evans for the illustrations and the waymarkers,  along with many other AWEN volunteers who brought this project to fruition and laid the foundations for our continuing programme of history walks.    Walk booklets are available at Whitchurch Hub - or just follow the items below.

The Philog Experience

Our second walk was along the Philog starting from opposite the Three Elms all the way to Manor Way.  As with all new things we found that the route was a little too ambitious and too long - following walks would be shorter!  The start of the walk is now marked by our permanent map board designed by local artist Anthony Evans.

Pub walk

In June 2023 Nigel and Terry put together a very popular Pub Walk around some of Whitchurch's many pubs.  You can follow the walk yourself by following the waymarkers below which give you a feeling for the Village's rumbunctious past.
